Improvement of Strength Characteristics of a Highly Plastic Expansive Soil with Fly Ash

Highly plastic expansive clays swell or shrink due to change in moisture content and they often have very low bearing capacity. Construction of engineering structures particularly pavements lightweight buildings on problematic soils such as highly may create severe structural problems poor properties that kind soil. This study focused the influence fly ash strength which are their undesirable characteristics high plasticity index, liquid limit, swelling shrinkage characteristics, Atterberg’s limit tests hydrometer were conducted obtain consistency limits grain-size distribution clay. Standard proctor for clay samples with different contents 10%, 15%, 20% performed determine maximum dry densities optimum water mixtures ash. The prepared at density unconfined compression (UCS) California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests. Effects fly0ash a investigated through CBR experiment results showed is promising additive enhance clays. An approximately 66% increase UCS values was observed addition into mixture weight.
